Manifold and underfloor heating control

The heart of the system. The manifold distributes water to the circuits, while the controls decide when and where heating occurs. If it is poorly balanced, one room will be overheated while another remains cold.

What a manifold does

It distributes the heating water from a single supply to the circuits of individual rooms and returns it. Each circuit has a flow meter used to set how much water flows through it. Longer circuits require more, shorter ones less. This is called hydraulic balancing; without it, underfloor heating will never heat evenly.

Mixing assembly and pump group

If the heat source is set to a higher temperature (boiler, radiators in part of the house), the manifold requires a mixing valve to cool the water for the underfloor heating to a safe 30 to 40 °C. This includes its own circulation pump and a safety thermostat that stops the water flow to the floor if overheating occurs. With a heat pump featuring a low-temperature output, mixing is often unnecessary.

Control: from thermostat to app

When to replace a manifold

Older manifolds without flow meters cannot be properly balanced. Clogged or seized valves fail to open, and plastic manifolds crack. If underfloor heating is uneven, before breaking up the floor we check the manifold and controls; this is most often where the cause lies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does one room heat up while another does not?

Most often due to unbalanced flows or air in the circuit. We balance the manifold according to circuit lengths and vent it. Breaking up the floor is almost never necessary.

Must every room have a thermostat?

Not mandatory, but worth it. The bathroom, bedroom and living room each require a different temperature, which you cannot set without thermostats.

Can smart control be added to an existing underfloor heating system?

In most cases, yes. We replace the thermostats with wireless ones, add actuators to the manifold and install a PBX. No work is done on the floor itself.
